About 10 years ago Swiss vocalist Fiona Grond found her way to Munich to study jazz singing and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Since then she has not only made a name for herself in the local scene but gained recognition throughout Germany and beyond. From a need for a special but intimate line-up and the desire for musical experiments she founded the trio “Interspaces” in autumn of 2018 together with saxophonist Moritz Stahl and guitarist Philipp Schiepek. and guitarist Philipp Schiepek. The trio recently released their second album “Poesias” on the renowned label ACT. The debut album “Interspaces” was released in June of 2021. In the same year, they took 3rd place at the international JazzBeet Competition of the Jazzfest Bonn and won the Women in Jazz Competition of the Women in Jazz Festival, as well as the Jazz Prize of the City of Halle. In 2020, Fiona Grond received the Leonard and Ida Wolf Memorial Prize for Music of the City of Munich. The trio has been touring numerous renowned venues and festivals in Germany and abroad.
Another of Grond’s projects is the newly founded duo with pianist Luca Zambito. They as well are currently touring throughout Germany. She worked with the award-winning Svetlana Marinchenko Trio, with whom she toured in Russia, among other places. Furthermore she has been working with other bands such as the Jazzrausch Big Band and the Christian Elsässer Jazz Orchestra and was selected by the New York Voices as a scholarship holder for the New York Voices Vocal Camp in 2019.
Born in and raised near Zurich, Fiona Grond showed great interest in music at an early age and initially received lessons in flute, guitar and classical singing. At the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, she first studied jazz vocals with Sanni Orasmaa and Anne Czichowsky and then jazz composition with Gregor Hübner and Christian Elsässer. So far she has studied and collaborated with various
international musicians, such as Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, The New York Voices, Theo Bleckmann, Ben Monder, Diana Torto, Jen Shyu and many more.
